Beta version — ahead of the public Play Store release
The Android app installs from the Play Store, like any other: in one tap, with automatic updates. It is still in closed testing, so you just need to join the testers list — it is free and immediate. It is a beta: the game runs, but not everything is there yet.
Join the test, in two steps
In this order — both matter:
- Join the testers group, with your phone's Google account.
- Open RunRunFar in the Play Store, accept to become a tester, then install.
If the second link shows an error, the first step hasn't been done yet, or you are not signed in with the right Google account.
Only one thing is asked of you: stay enrolled for two weeks. Google requires twelve testers without interruption before allowing publication, and the counter goes back to zero as soon as someone leaves. If you don't like the game, tell us — but keep the app installed until the end.
What the app asks for, and when
No permission is requested at launch. Each one comes when it is needed, and the game works if you refuse it — you only lose what it brought.
- Location, when you start a live run: it measures your kilometres. Recording continues with the screen off, and a notification stays visible while it runs — as long as it is there, the run is in progress. The app never asks for permanent background location: outside a run, it doesn't know where you are.
- Physical activity, to read the phone's step counter and turn your steps into resources. Only the day's total is sent to the server.
- Notifications, for attacks, messages and objects brought back.
What is collected and why: privacy policy. You can delete your account at any time from the app.
Rating
RunRunFar is rated PEGI 3 by Pan-European Game Information, with no content descriptors. The notice “Users Interact” means that players can exchange messages: their town's chat room and private messages. Anyone can block a player or report a message, and the team reads what is reported to it. See pegi.info.
Why a closed test, and not a normal release
Google requires every personal developer account to run a closed test with at least twelve people for fourteen consecutive days before allowing open publication. It is not a trial of the game, it is a platform rule — and the only way to a public release. Hence the request above.
One detail to avoid a surprise: when the app reaches the Play Store, it will be signed by Google and no longer by us. The Play Store version will therefore not install over this one — you will have to uninstall and reinstall once, and log in again. Nothing will be lost.
On iPhone
RunRunFar is free on the App Store. Testers who want new features early can still use TestFlight.
Without installing anything
The game also runs in the browser: play online (in French for now). Steps, however, can only be counted by the app, on the phone.
